News

To read news, start up emacs, then type M-x gnus ( ESCAPE-x gnus ). When the news is ready, you will see a list like this:
     18: alt.coffee
    198: news.groups.questions
      2: news.groups.reviews
    142: rec.music.indian.classical
    159: rec.music.info
     93: rec.music.makers.piano
   1553: rec.music.makers.synth
    214: sci.math
    120: sci.physics.particle

The number preceding a news group gives the number of unread articles. Put the cursor in front of the group you wish to read and tap the space bar. To scroll through a news item longer than one page, tap the space bar. If you continue to tap it, you will move to the next news item. You may use control-n to move to the next news item, control-p to the previous one. To stop reading news, type " q ". You will return to emacs . To exit emacs, type C-x C-q (control-x, control-q).

News groups

There are over three thousand news groups as of this writing. They are listed in your .newsrc file. In it you will see lines like this:

   alt.philosophy.zen!
   sci.physics.particle:

The first group is ignored, the second is appears in the list of available groups once the M-x gnus command is completed. You can change the punctuation (: or !) to enable/disable a newsgroup.
